A Bite Out of the Butte

This Google Earth image shows the northeastern half of the butte viewed as though you were flying in from the north. Rock taken from the quarry was hauled by rail to the construction site near Glasgow for several years during the 1930s. A 10-mile rail spur ran from Snake Butte into Harlem along the east side of present-day Harlem High School where it connected to Great Northern's main line. Removing rock material from a place that has spiritual significance to Native Americans would be unacceptable by today's standards (and laws). BACK
